ORTEC: Local Software to Cloud-Based Excellence

The Challenge

ORTEC’s intelligent software required a user experience overhaul to ensure consistency and ease of use without alienating existing users. Adopting Material Design rules provided a strong foundation, but the challenge was to integrate these rules while maintaining the unique navigation patterns essential for ORTEC’s sophisticated software. The goal was to enhance the visual design and user experience, making it intuitive yet powerful.

My solution

The first step was to implement a visual design system that ensured a uniform user experience across all platforms.

I used Material Design as the baseline for the interface.

Then I fixed the navigation patterns that broke this logic, starting with the quick usability wins.

ORTEC’s unique functionality stayed intact and the user experience improved.

A significant aspect of the project was creating unique dashboards custom to specific user personas. The user research showed multiple personas, each with its own job stories.

That let me define roles and design a custom dashboard for the tasks of each user type.

Every user got the tools they need to do their own job.

Impact

The transition to a Material Design system library set the stage for the redesign of all ORTEC applications. The high-contrast components and improved readability made the software more user-friendly and visually appealing.
