Working with UX/Design Professionals

I start with research: understanding your customers, analyzing data and auditing your current UX. Then design: wireframes, visual design, and prototypes. Finally, handoff: detailed Figma files your team can implement. Regular check-ins throughout.

Include: business goals, target audience, technical constraints, examples you like (and why), and success metrics. Share brand guidelines and existing assets. Be specific about problems to solve rather than solutions to implement.

Ecommerce specific experience, not just general web optimization. Data analysis skills and testing methodology knowledge. Clear communication about recommendations and trade-offs. References from similar-sized businesses in related industries.

Clear, specific feedback referencing design elements. Explain problems rather than prescribing solutions. Consolidate feedback to avoid scope creep. Set expectations on revision rounds. Structured feedback leads to better outcomes faster.

Ask about conversion principles, platform limitations, and checkout optimization. Review ecommerce specific work in their portfolio. Discuss how they measure success. Experienced ecommerce designers speak naturally about metrics and business impact.

Yes. Early developer involvement catches implementation issues before they become expensive changes. They can flag technical constraints and suggest alternatives. Collaborative reviews reduce handoff friction and implementation time.

Homepage redesign: 2-4 weeks. Product page templates: 1-2 weeks. Full site redesign: 2-4 months. Timelines depend on scope, feedback cycles, and implementation. Plan for revisions. Rushing design to meet deadlines rarely saves time overall.

Look for case studies with measurable results, not just visual outputs. The best ecommerce UX portfolios show: the problem identified, the diagnosis process, what was changed, and what happened to conversion rate. A portfolio of beautiful designs with no performance data suggests the designer hasn't been held accountable to commercial outcomes.

Freelancers for specific, scoped projects. Agencies for large complex projects needing multiple specialists. Design subscriptions for ongoing, variable design needs at a predictable monthly cost. Typically 40-60% cheaper than agency project pricing. For most ecommerce stores with consistent design needs, a subscription is the best ROI.

Start with a 30-minute intro call at btng.studio/book-a-call. It's free, no commitment. I'll review your store before the call and come prepared with observations. If there's a fit, you'll receive a proposal within 48 hours. Most engagements start within one week of agreement.

For conversion optimization work, hire an ecommerce specialist. They pattern-match faster because they've seen the same friction points across dozens of stores. A generalist needs 2-3 months to learn platform constraints, category benchmarks, and what actually moves conversion. Time that costs you revenue.

You submit requests through a shared board (Trello or Notion). The designer works through one active request at a time, delivering within 24-48 hours. Review and request revisions until satisfied, then activate the next request. Monthly billing with the option to pause when your design backlog is clear.

Track metrics before and after implementation: conversion rate, revenue per visitor, average order value, and bounce rate. Calculate lift and compare to design investment. Allow 4-8 weeks post-implementation for accurate measurement.

Figma dominates for design and collaboration. Analytics tools (GA4, Hotjar) for research. Notion or Miro for documentation. Loom for video walkthroughs. The specific tools matter less than how effectively they're used.

UX (User Experience) focuses on how a product works, research, flows, wireframes. UI (User Interface) focuses on how it looks, visual design, typography, colors. Both matter for ecommerce. Many designers do both; specialists go deeper in one area.

A design subscription is a fixed monthly fee for unlimited design requests. One active at a time, with 24-48 hour turnaround per request. Worth it if you have 5+ ongoing design needs per month. Typical cost savings are 40-60% versus agency pricing, 20-40% versus consistent freelancer use. The key is finding a subscription with genuine ecommerce specialization, not a generalist service.
